Setting Out To Fight Hunger

Our Programs

It’s our mission to help people reduce their poverty by a huge number of helpful
campaigns to make it essential.

School and Community Pantry Support

Our collections support dozens of pantries in Durham County, including several middle and high schools, local colleges, and a variety of community partners.

Neighborhood Collections

PORCH-Durham has over 50 active neighborhoods that collectively donate between 4,000-5,000 pounds of shelf-stable foods each month. Food is sorted and distributed to dozens of schools and community partners in Durham County.

Emergency Grocery Cards

Launched in March 2020, this program supports families in crisis. Over $200,000 in grocery cards have been distributed through DPS and partner agencies.

Setting Out To Fight Hunger

The Impact of Neighbors Helping Neighbors

You might be surprised at how effective a volunteer-based organization can be at fighting hunger at the local level. The PORCH neighborhood food-drive model has been remarkably successful at getting food into the hands of people who need it.

How to Donate Food

If you live in a PORCH neighborhood, please check with your Neighborhood Coordinator about when to leave donated bags of food on your porch. (If you need to be put in touch with your Neighborhood Coordinator, please fill out this brief form.)

While your Neighborhood Coordinator will give you specific instructions, you can anticipate donating non-perishable food donations in the week prior to the published Sort Dates. After collecting the food, Neighborhood Coordinators will transport it to Extraordinary Ventures for sorting and delivery to pantries and families.
