PORCH Food Drives
Please avoid food in containers that can easily tear (e.g. no soft-tops) or break (e.g. no glass).
These non-perishable food items are most commonly requested by the distribution partners served by PORCH-Durham:
- 1 lb. bags of rice
- Bags of dried beans
- Peanut butter and jelly in plastic containers
- Canned fruit (labeled “no added sugar”)
- Pasta sauce in plastic containers
- Canned hearty soups and stews
- Canned tuna and chicken
- Kid-friendly snack foods (e.g. granola bars, fruit snacks, cheese/peanut butter crackers)
Please consider healthier options by looking for the labels below:
- Low-sodium or water-packed - this applies to canned vegetables, as well as canned beans, nut butters, meats and tuna. These items are lower in saturated fat than their counterparts, and are great sources of vitamins, minerals, fiber and protein
- 100% juice, and no added sugar - this applies to canned fruit, which are an excellent source of Vitamin C, a powerhouse vitamin that supports healthy immune systems, in addition to many other functions
- Whole wheat or whole grain - this applies to pastas, rice, cereals and oats. These items are excellent sources of fiber, and are more satiating and filling than their alternatives
